Description
Greece, Macedon Kingdom, Pella Mint, ca. 306 to 283 BCE. (17 g) AR tetradrachm of Demetrius Poliorcetes, diademed and horned head right on obverse and on reverse Pelagaios seated left on rock, holding aphlaston in extended right hand and trident in left; monogram to inner left and right. Well struck with attractive obverse toning. Cp. Newell 121. Size: 1" W (2.5 cm)
Demetrius I, called Poliorcetes, "The Besieger", was a Macedonian nobleman and military leader who eventually ascended to the throne of Macedon as the first king of the Antigonid Dynasty in Macedon.
