Description
Ancient Greece, Athens, Haimon Group, ca. early 5th century BCE. An elegant blackware wine cup (skyphos) of a classic form with very thin walls, a deep bowl, a short raised foot with a concave base, and twin slightly raised loop handles, probably used for drinking wine at symposia. Both sides of this drinking vessel feature a saucy scene delineated in black-figure depicting a Satyr pursuing a lovely Maenad (perhaps attending a celebration of Dionysos - god of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre) flanked by stylized palmettes with dotted vines in the field. Quite an entertaining example! Size: 7.875" W x 3.125" H (20 cm x 7.9 cm)
This vessel has been attributed to the Haimon Group because of the resemblance of its style of drawing to that of the Haimon Painter, an anonymous painter named by C.H.E. Haspels and John Beazley on account of a recurring subject depicted on his black-figure vases - the Sphinx and his victim Haimon. To see a vessel painted in a similar manner, see this lekythos (accession number 57.12.13) in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
