1820 American Builders Companion By Benjamin Architect Carpenter Canton OH Owner. Early Antique Architectural Book; "The American Builder's Companion; or, A System of Architecture, Particularly Adapted to the Present Style of Building..." by Asher Benjamin, Architect and Carpenter. Published by R. P. & C. Williams of Boston, 1820. Illustrated with 61 Copperplate Engravings. Book contains approximately 104 printed pages and is about 8-3/4" x 10-1/2". Period pencil ownership on inside front cover reads; "Wm. P. Watson (or Witson) - 164 Plain St. - Canton, O.". (This area of Ohio is noted for its Classical and Greek Revival architecture and a reference such as this would have been appropriate for Canton ownership and use.). Rudimentary pencil drawn house-front facade along with floor plans on final blank end papers suggest this was a working copy...possibly used in the building of that house (possibly Watson's).

Condition

front cover is nearly separated from the binding. occasional period writing and architect's notation. overall soiling and foxing spots, occasional edge wear and tears. heavy imprint of steel plate engravings has caused occasional detachment of a page border in approximate 1" wide sections in the margin. in some cases early, tiny tape repairs hold the imprint into the page. All text pages are present but plates 4, 55, and 58 are missing. plate 35 and the adjacent sheet (page 67/68) share a similar bad diagonal tear. THIS WAS CLEARLY A BUILDER'S WORKING COPY AND NOT A SHELF BOOK.
