Details: This lot consists of a large rolled map, best described by its own title: "A General Chart of THE MEDITERRANEAN, Adriatic and Black Seas; TOGETHER WITH The Grecian Archipelago CONSTRUCTED PRINCIPALLY FROM The Surveys of [William Henry] Smyth, [Francis] Beaufort, Graves, Copeland, [Vincente] Tofino, Bérard, ... MADE By Order of their respective Governments, By J.W. NORIE, HYDROGRAPHER. A NEW EDITION, REVISED 1857."
The reverse bears handwritten inscriptions naming a Franklin Howes (possibly a clipper captain) as well as handmade red marks on cities all along the coasts, navigational markings and lines, and other handwritten notes, especially around the city of Alexandria.
The chart features many detail panes and engravings of landmarks such as lighthouses, is affixed to canvas trim, bears a label on the back for a dealer or manufacturer of nautical and navigational goods and tools which reads at bottom "Boston, May 14 1856 FREDERIC W. LINCOLN, JR.", who was the 16th and 18th Mayor of Boston. Measurements are approximately 30.75" x 95".
Condition / Notes: This map is in good condition and show signs of normal period wear that may include patina, abrasions, worn or torn paper and soiling. There are repairs to the backing paper of the map.
