Description
T. Bailey (American, 19th/20th C.) Original Signed Oil on Canvas Nautical Painting in Wooden Frame - This piece is an original oil on canvas painting done by the intriguing and mysterious artist "T. Bailey". The painting depicts a nautical scene, with a large boat at full mast in a choppy sea. The piece is signed "T. Bailey" in the lower left corner. It is said by many that T. Bailey did not exist, but was a pseudonym of several artists from the Massachusetts communities around Cape Ann, who painted for the tourist trade during the early to mid-20th century. After 1910, a large number of nautical paintings flooded the marked, all sold by an artist's representative/dealer named Morris Hambro (1860-1938). It is said that Hambro invented the pseudonym and purchased unsigned works, to which he would affix the Bailey signature. It has been suggested that William Paskell was one of the painters of T. Bailey's works, and Davenport's Art Reference has him listed as Bailey, T. (William Paskell 1866-1961) whose subject matter consisted of harbors, docks, ships, and elk. It has been thought that Paskell used two pseudonyms, "T. Bailey" and "H. H. Howe". This truly is a unique and intriguing piece. The piece (including the frame) measures 22"W x 18.5"L.
