Exceptional President “A. Lincoln” ALS Headed “Executive Mansion / August 20, 1861 / Hon. Sec. of War”
ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809-1865). Sixteenth President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his Assassination in April of 1865.
August 20, 1861-Dated Civil War Period, Rare “Executive Mansion” Autograph Letter Signed, “A. Lincoln” as President, 4 pages, measuring 5” x 8”, at Washington, Choice Very Fine. Abraham Lincoln writes to his Secretary of War (Simon Cameron). This Letter reads, in full;
“Executive Mansion / August 20, 1861 / Hon. Sec. of War --- Sir, -- Mr. John M. Huntington calls on me this morning saying that several weeks ago I indorsed on his application to be an Assistant Quarter-Master in the Army these words towit ‘Mr. Huntington is presented for the position of Assistant Quater-Master in the Army - I herewith send letter and papers, recommending him for a different appointment as showing his position and standing. If there is a vacancy, I think his appointment would be a very proper one! He also says Senator Mr. Dongel, in his letter, asks for the appointment, as a personal favor to himself - If these things be found to be correctly stated, let the appointment be made. -- Yours truly - (Signed) A. Lincoln”.
John M. Huntington was appointed as Assistant Quartermaster with the rank of Captain, on August 30, 1861. Docketing upon two of the blank extra pages. This lot also includes a chest-up Portrait Engraving of Lincoln. Housed in a custom-made Hard cloth covered slipcase with gilt lettering along spine that reads, “Abraham Lincoln / Autograph Letter Signed as President - August 20, 1861”. A choice example, boldly written in brown ink with a vivid signature, “A. Lincoln” measuring about 1.5” long at its conclusion.
