Vollard’s riving ambition was to become the greatest publisher of prints and illustrated books and his collaboration with Rouault proved to be one of the most productive in the history of printmaking. The two produced several notable portfolios including Miserere, Les Fleurs du Mal, and Cirque de l’Etoile Filante (Circus of the Shooting Stars). The world of the circus had always interested Rouault through its contrast of superficial brightness with the infinite sadness of circus life. The images in this portfolio describe Rouault’s attempt to strip away the “spangles” of the clown’s costume and reveal the “reflection of paradise lost.”Auction results for Georges Henri Rouault aquatints:07-01-2004, CIRQUE DE L`ÉTOILE FILANTE, Aquatint, 17.91 x 13.58 in (45.49 x 34.49 cm), Sothebys - Australia: Melbourne, 25,200 GBP; 03-31-2010, André Suarès, Passion, Ambroise Vollard, Paris, 1939, Aquatint in colours, 17.72 x 13.39 in (45.01 x 34.01 cm), Christies - United Kingdom: London, King Street, 25,000 GBP10-31-2006, Cirque de L' Etoile Filante, Aquatint Bound volume with complete text, 17.64 x 13.54 in (44.81 x 34.39 cm), 1938, Swann Galleries - The United States: New York, 40,000 USD;06-03-2009, LE CIRQUE DE L'ETOILE FILANTE, Aquatint, 17.80 x 13.58 in (45.21 x 34.49 cm), 1938, Artcurial - Briest-Poulain-Le Fur - France: Paris, 29,040 EUR11-01-2007, MISEREREe, Aquatint, 25.79 x 19.88 in (65.51 x 50.50 cm), 1922-1927, Sothebys - The United States: New York, $34,600 US;09-18-2008, AUTOMNE, Aquatint in colors, 20.08 x 26.18 in (51.00 x 66.50 cm); Swann Galleries - The United States: New York, USA, NY, 28,800 USD;10-31-2013, CIRQUE DE L' ÉTOILE FILANTE (CHAPON/ROUAULT 240-256), Aquatint, 12.09 x 8.62 in (30.71 x 21.89 cm), Sothebys - The United States: New York, 28,125 USD; 04-29-2011, MISERERE (CHAPON/ROUAULT 54-56, 58-59, 61-72, 74-111), Aquatint with etching, 22.68 x 16.46 in (57.61 x 41.81 cm), Sothebys - The United States: New York, 28,125 USD;06-08-2006, LES FLEURS DU MAL, Aquatint in colors, 12.28 x 8.35 in (31.19 x 21.21 cm), 1936-38, Piasa - France: Paris, 20,500 EUR;10-29-2013, Miserere, Editions de l'Etoile Filante, Aquatint, 27.87 x 21.06 in (70.79 x 53.49 cm), Christies - The United States: New York, ROCKEFELLER PLAZA, 23,750 USD; 06-06-2005, André Suarès, Cirque. 1930, Aquatint, 122.05 x 82.68 in (310.01 x 210.01 cm), Piasa - France: Paris, 18,000 EUR; 11-04-2004, Automne, Aquatint color, 20.08 x 26.18 in (51.00 x 66.50 cm), Swann Galleries - The United States: New York, 19,000 USD; 03-08-2012, Aquatint in colours, 20.08 x 26.18 in (51.00 x 66.50 cm), Swann Galleries - The United States: New York, 18,000 USD; Condition: having a six light surface scratches (longest approximately 1"W) with eight apparent puncture marks to paper.
