The Holy Bible , 6 vol., profusely extra-illustrated with over 2000 plates (see footnote), many coloured, initials and some illustrations coloured by hand, manuscript indexes at front of 3 vol. detailing the extra plates and their subject, artist, date, etc., contemporary morocco gilt, worn, many covers detached, one spine detached, g.e., 4to, Cassell, Petter, and Galpin , [n.d., but spines dated 1864-1868] Provenance: Robert Trotter M.D. The extra plates in this bible predominantly date from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, most of them engraved, lithographed or chromolithographed, after Old Masters and other artists, including Gustave Dore, J.M.W. Turner, John Martin, W.H. Bartlett, and others. As well as prints from other books and bibles, there are also nineteenth-century cartoons, advertisements, almanack covers, song and music sheet covers, as well as a few seventeenth-century prints, oriental prints, and photographs. Some of the images seem to have a very tenuous link with the scriptures.
