Description
A Late 15th/Early 16th Century Franco-Flemish Gothic Biblical Tapestry Fragment,
Possibly depicting the life of David, the shepherd boy who became King of Israel. Also include depictions of courtly figures with lavish robes, a shield-form cartouche woven with a scene of David slaying the lion.
The fragment may have formed part of a large narrative tapestry depicting the life of David. The smaller scene would thus depict David slaying the lion. This type of tapestry, known as a stage-set or altar tapestry is characterized by the jewelled columns dividing various narrative scenes usually depicting allegorical figures pitted against each other. The compartments made it possible to present several different episodes simultaneously and link them together visually. A tapestry with similar imagery displaying "The Virtues and the Vices" can be seen in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
H: 90 W: 83 1/2 in.
Provenance: Previously from the Collection of Helene Arpels and Andre Azria.
