Item Details
Description
Toldot Ya’akov Yosef on the Torah, Chassidic exegesis, by Rabbi Ya’akov Yosef HaCohen of Polonne (Polnoye) Korets, [1780]. Printed by Tzvi Hirsch son of Aryeh Leib [Margaliot] and his son-in-law Shmuel son of Yissachar Ber Segal.
Toldot Ya’akov Yosef is among the first Chassidic books written and the first printed Chassidic book. Authored by the kabbalist Rabbi Ya’akov Yosef HaCohen of Polonne (died in Tishrei 1783), an early prominent disciple of the Ba’al Shem Tov (according to various Chassidic traditions, he was born in the 1660s and died close to the age of 120). This book is the most prominent and authentic source of the Ba’al Shem Tov's teachings, citing more than 280 Torah thoughts which the author himself heard from his teacher the Besht [throughout the book, each citation is emphasized with the words “I have heard from my teacherâ€].
Chassidic Torah scholars acclaimed the holiness of the book. Rabbi Pinchas of Korets stated that such a book is unprecedented, and that its Torah is divine. He was wont to say that all the new books are not aligned with the truth, with the exception of the books of the Polonne Rabbi which are "Torah from Paradise" and each thought of “I have heard from my teacher" can resurrect the dead. The Saba Kadisha of Shpola often advised using the segula of placing the book under the head of an ill person (LaYesharim Tehilla).
At the time R. Mendel of Vitsyebsk came to Eretz Israel, he met R. Pinchas of Korets who said to him, "Why did the Polonne Rabbi print one thousand books and set the price of one gold piece for each book. He should have rather printed only one book and I would have paid one thousand gold pieces for it…".
During the course of the battle against Chassidism, the first edition was publicly burnt in the city of Brody and in other cities, thus this edition is rare (Encyclopedia L'Chassidut, Vol. 2, p. 277).
