Description
From a prominent collection, a Boston & Albany Railroad frame made by Steam Gauge Lamp & Lantern. This model has a twist off bell. Some Steam Gauge frames have a pinch pot, like the Fitchburg elsewhere in this auction. The lid is clearly stamped B&ARR in nice lettering. The bell comes off freely. There is no Steam Gauge marking, but it's pretty clear that this is the maker based on intake holes, bail ears, vent holes brass top, etc. The brass top is in fine shape with one minor split on the edge. It has a huge glass fount and a very old flat pick wick brass burner. The metal is dark but solid.
The globe is a fine 6" tear drop with B&ARR cast in fancy lettering with a rectangular panel. This is standard for the Boston & Albany. It's a nice heavy authentic globe.
I think the Bangor And Aroostook did not exist when this lantern was made. The BAR didn't exist until the 1890s and this lantern is quite a bit earlier than that. For those who have a different way of thinking, that's fine too.
