According to family sources, the present drawing was purchased from Mark Nixon and his long-time business partner, Baron Herbert Hischemoeller van Kamphuyzen (of the Netherlands). Nixon built the famous “Kasteel Kamphuyzen,” a 6,000 square foot home in Beverly Hills, California, naming the home after his partner, the Baron van Kamphuyzen. Van Kamphuyzen, who died in 1991, immigrated to the United States in the 1940’s, presumably bringing art and antiques from his family’s estate in Holland, and became a U.S. citizen in 1946. Van Kamphuyzen, who was educated at Eton in England, was an aide to Lord Baden Powell, and later became honorary consul general of the Ivory Coast. Specific details about the Baron’s collection of art and antiques are unclear although it is believed that both he and his partner, Mark Nixon, collected numerous Dutch, French, German, and European fine and decorative artworks. The present consignor’s family was friendly with Nixon for more than 30 years.
