Description
A pair of George III satinwood and painted semi-elliptical card tables, circa 1790, attributed to Gillows, the satinwood and rosewood banded tops with painted band of floral decoration opening to a baise inset playing surface, the frieze with central tablet and rosewood banded panels interspersed with inlaid ovals above each square section leg terminating in spade feet, each 75cm high, 92cm wide, 45cm deep Provenance: The Barratt Collection, Crowe Hall, Bath, Christie's, 16th December 2010 Gillows produced this type of satinwood and inlaid tables, both with or without painted floral decoration in the 1780's and 1790's. See Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, Vol.1 2008, pp 260-261, plates 263 and 264 for an example in the Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendall. A related pair of tables were sold Christies, London, 14 July 2001, lot 110 (realising £58,000 including premium) which were supplied to Lionel Tollemache, 5th Earl of Dysart (d.1799) for Ham House, Surrey.
