Item Details
Description
Lucio Fontana, Argentinian-Italian, 1899-1968, Alfa Romeo "Discus", a machined and pierced steel disk with an affixed smaller .800 silver disk engraved "Alfa Romeo Milano a Dmitri Nabokov per le vittorie sportive 1964" and hand engraved by Fontana on the larger steel disk.
The late race car driver Dmitri Nabokov, the son of novelist Vladimir Nabokov drove for Alfa Romeo throughout 1964 - this trophy possibly awarded for his success driving TZ for the Coppa Asiago. Fontana is the most prominent artist to have been commissioned by Alfa Romeo to create these pieces. Our thanks to the Museo Alfa Romeo in Milan for their assistance. Provenance: from the estate of Dr. Adrian Zorgniotti, possibly a gift from Nabokov, a race car driver as well as a noted basso profundo who may have known Zorgniotto in that capacity. See property title. (QBURCH2303){PR} Property Title: From the estate of Dr. Dr. Adrian Zorgniotti, 1925-1994, noted American urologist, medical director and house physician for the Metropolitan Opera.
Measurements: 10.75 diameter overall
Condition
light abrasions to the inner silver disk, Fontana's engraved signature with light rust, the unmachined reverse of the larger disk with scattered light surface rust.
