CD-4 COVERED LYRE PRESSED SALT, opaque soft violet blue with subtle mottling, slightly translucent under strong light, raised on four scrolled feet, cover with pine cone finial and beads on rim interior arranged 10 x 20 x 10 x 20. Recorded by Neal as unique. Reserve. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1830-1845. 3" HOA, 2" x 3 1/8", base 1 7/8" H.
Base is virtually proof, rim with only a minute open bubble on one end scallop and a minor flake on one corner scroll, feet with one shallow interior chip and a hint of mold roughness, cover with a flake at one shoulder corner, along with a chip and some light flakes/mold roughness to rim.

Catalogue Note: This extremely rare and important salt is one of only seven recorded in this color. The example from the Elsholz collection was exhibited at the CMOG in 1954 and the HFM in 1960; formerly in the collection of Mrs. Harry S. High, it was purchased at the Elsholz auction by Gary Stradling. The example at Corning and illustrated by Spillman is from the Louise S. Esterly collection and is the same specimen illustrated by McKearin. The example illustrated in Barlow/Kaiser is from the Bennington Museum. The Metropolitan Museum of Art was gifted the Dr. Charles W. Green example in 1951 by his widow. An unpublished example, purchased from Abraham & May, resides in a private New York City collection. A sixth example with a reattached leg surfaced in 2005 from the Esther Ludwig collection sold through Freeman's in Philadelphia.
