Item Details
Description
This vase measures 4.5 inches tall by 3.875 inches. This vase was purchased from the artist for the Vasefinder Collection. It is marked DW, as shown. Per Vasefinder and the Charlie B Gallery, Harrison David Woodin (1929-) was born in Minneola, New York. He received his high school diploma from New Paltz High School. In 1952, he was awarded his degree in Ceramic Art and Design from Alfred, where he was a student of Charles Harder. After finishing at Alfred, David Woodin spent almost four decades working in industry, where he performed many high level technical positions in the field of ceramics working for such firms as Honeywell Incorporated, Brown & Root and Alaska Constructors, Pyrometer Associates in Puerto Rico and Applied Industrial Instrumentation in Reno Nevada, where he ultimately purchased the servicing department from AII and changed the name to Instrument Service Incorporated. One of his important accounts included Gladding McBean. David retired from ISI in 1994. While he was still working in industry though, he started making pots in 1981 after leaving the wheel for sometime, and has been producing work in both Washington D.C. and Reno, Nevada, where he has his two homes. His work is truly carrying on the Classical Alfred tradition with pure forms, where he throws, extrudes and jiggers his wares, which are covered in rich glazes. His glaze arsenal includes a powerful array of crystalline glazes, which have an outstanding timeless quality to their growth and execution. In 2003, David went back to school and obtained his M.F.A. in Ceramics from George Washington University. His work is in the permanent collection of Wally Cuchine of Eureka, Nevada.
Condition
There is no post-factory damage, such chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs. The blue crystalline glaze is a bit more subtle than the photographs reveal.
