1816 First Lady Dolley Madison Partly-Printed Document
(DOLLEY PAYNE TODD MADISON) (1768-1849). First Lady as wife of James Madison, President of the United States from 1809 to 1817; helped to furnish the newly constructed White House. When the British set fire to it in 1814, she was credited with saving the classic portrait of George Washington.
November 10, 1816-Dated Federal Period, Partly-Printed Document (not signed) with some Manuscript Portions written in the Hand of Dolley Madison, as First Lady, 1 page, oblong octavo, measuring 7.5” x 9”, Fine. Here, Mrs. Madison invites Ohio Governor Jonathan Meigs, Jr., and his wife to dine with Madisons the following Thursday afternoon. The bottom of the Partially-Printed Invitation bears a contemporary note: “This invitation given Mary Rhodes by ‘Daphne” the Indian servant in the Meigs home.” With Integral Address sheet which was Hand-addressed by Dolley Madison, to Governor Meigs and his wife. Some foxing and soiling, tipped to a heavier stock printed page. Also includes a Second Invitation to Governor Meigs by Mrs. A. J. Dallas. (2 items).
