Description
This is a very rare style of helmet mask from the Kota peoples of Gabon, west Africa. Carved from a light weight wood and accented with white and red kaolin clay pigment. Of interest are the regalia holes, showing field use and wear, and of note* there is an area on back where a large chip of wood was broken away, and the section re-drilled and worn smooth again from handling. All of this wear suggests actual use as a dance mask. This type of helmet or crest mask is used among the Kota people in northeastern Gabon (Ivindo region) during the initiation of boys, funerals of important men and against witchcraft. The mask itself measures 23 x 10 inches and will also include a durable metal display stand.
Condition
Very well weathered and areas of erosion, chip in the back of mask worn smooth again from use.
