Item Details
Description
Near East, Syro-Hittite, ca. 2800 to 1500 BCE. Two complementary pottery figures from one of the world's oldest known religious traditions: one a darker buff clay fully body figure of the goddess Astarte, and the other a light buff clay larger head of a similar goddess figure. Size of full figure: 3.75" W x 1.75" H (9.5 cm x 4.4 cm)

The form of the Astarte figurine rises from a columnar lower body until it reaches the triangular upper body with angular arms and shoulders. Both arms are drawn to the chest. The goddess wears a necklace and has a stylized face that is instantly recognizable as from this period. A large, thin nose, some kind of projecting headdress/coiffure, and a pair of huge eyes made from concentric coils of pottery give it its form. The head has a nearly identical face, with similar coils forming hair along the sides of the face; her head projects backwards in what must be considered her coiffure.

The design of the eyes on both figures relates to the common motif throughout the Ancient Near East that eyes must be wide and attentive to show religious devotion. Astarte is the goddess who is also known as Ishtar in some parts of Mesopotamia, a goddess associated with femininity, motherhood, and war. Figures like this one may have been votive, made to be placed on altars or left behind as offerings at temples.
