Description
Dr. Wernher von Braun Autograph on a January 28, 1962 typed letter to Dr. von Braun from Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger in which he says: "Dr. Kantrowitz gave me this paper for you (not enclosed). He asked whether you might endorse the concept of a big manned space station from the technical viewpoint; I said yes, mentioning your articles in which you developed the "space wheel" idea, but stated that the present national policy is to put a man on the Moon as early as possible; this project is so formidable that existing manpower, money and time do not permit us to pursue a big wheel project vigorously at the present time, unless another national policy is established which secures the necessary support for that project…". Dr. von Braun's secretary (?) notated (1-31) that "Apparently no action required on your part". Dr. von Braun notated, in pencil: "Ernst - I'm still for a large doughnut-shaped space station - but on a non-interference basis with our lunar project. I'm opposed - and Art K. knows it - to the idea of going to the moon with lots of little supply rockets such as Atlas. Our studies clearly show that it would be a logistic monstrosity". He has signed with his characteristic, informal "B" and the date "2-2". A rare commentary in which he enunciates his ideas behind both the lunar mission and the space station. An important document.
