Description
PAIR OF EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY IRISH MAHOGANY SIDE
TABLES
each with a rectangular top, above a conforming frieze and
serpentine apron, centred by a dramatic scallop shell, raised on tapered legs, terminating on claw and ball feet
Dimensions: 74 cm. high; 100 cm. wide; 54 cm. deep (2)
The overall restraint exercised by the unknown cabinetmaker that produced these pier tables exhibits fortitude free of the constraining control of a city guild. This is especially evident in the simplicity of the design and the crisply carved scallop shells.
The shells, symbols of the Roman goddess Venus, are perfectly centred on each frieze for maximum impact. The subsequent harmonious balance achieved is visually satisfying while the rigidity of the legs hints of those of the marble and mosaic table discovered at Pompeii and now at the Naples Archaeological Museum.
