Item Details
Description
Martin Flavin. Typescript for Journey in the Dark. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1941-1943. Original typescript for the author's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, compositor's copy with numerous corrections and notations throughout. Note of provenance from May, 1945, on a Book and Authors War Bond Committee document, stating author's donation of this manuscript to the U. S. Treasury Department, and later presentation to Seton Hill College. Portion of the cover-page with note by Flavin detailing his writing process, signed, affixed to leaf of smooth stock. 8.5 x 11 inches. 611 leaves, printed rectos only; three-hole punched. Two leaves from the publisher with copyright information and author's works. Page edges worn; particularly to left edge near hole-punches; faint marginal toning; occasional creasing. Very good, housed in an archival box. An uncommon opportunity to obtain manuscript material for a Pulitzer Prize winner.

Note reads: "This is the original MS of 'Journey in the Dark,' as I wrote it at the rate of about 500 words a day between April 1941 and July 1943. I compose on a typewriter, and thought I may write a page a dozen times, when I finally leave it, it is finished. Indeed, long before this book was finished, it was going to galleys. I use loose leaf paper--keeping the work in binders as it progresses. / [signed] Martin Flavin / May 15th, 1944."
