Item Details
Description
American Neo-Grec Inlaid Rosewood Cabinet, ca. 1866, probably by Pottier and Stymus, New York, the top with a shaped plinth with leaf and urn inlay, the case with a single door centered by a copper-clad electroform plaque depicting a classical maiden with amphora, flanked by stepped-back canted ends, each with an inlaid panel in the Renaissance Revival taste, the door opening to reveal an interior in carefully selected birdseye maple veneers, with a pair of like shelves, h. 47-1/2", w. 61", d. 25".
Condition
In very good polished and restored condition. The ebonizing and gilt incising have been renewed. The finish appears to be shellac. It may be a polished original surface. The piece exhibits normal minor mars, shrinkage and indications of age and use, including some wear around the edges of the bottom plinth, now finished over. Tight and solid. There is a small veneer loss on the lower edge of the upper section banding, about 3/8" wide and 3/16" high. There is also a section of filler about 1/4" diameter. Interior is lined in birdseye maple. Lock appears original; key not present. The plaque is electrotype and, as such, everything one sees on the face is also on the interior back. The bezel around the plaque is stamped with a number that appears to be "61" and the clearer letters "PS" for Pottier and Stymus. Top dimensions: Shaped back section: 5-1/2" high; 5-1/2" deep at center; 12/34" deep at deepest part of wings. Lower section top center: flat section: 30-1/2" wide x 16-1/8" deep. Lower section of top center including molding overall: 34" wide x 18" deep.
