Description
Good Shreve & Co. Sterling Silver and Engraved Glass Center Bowl, first quarter 20th century, San Francisco, California, the shaped navette base decorated with acanthus scrolls and mounted at the sides and corners with applied figures of Bacchic putti among grapevines, fitted with a conforming fluted glass bowl with scalloped rim and wheel-engraved with rococo fans and lattice, overall h. 5-1/2", l. 16-1/4", w. 10-1/2", 77.32 t. oz. (silver base only).
Condition
All four sections of bunting which join the figural groups are broken on both ends, though these sections are all present and attached at the center with the original rivet. The bunting sections on the narrow ends are similarly broken but present. The left arching "arbor" of the figural group at one end is broken off and lacking; otherwise no losses noted. Considerable oxidation and black spotting throughout, easily removed with a proper cleaning. Some of the retaining nuts holding the figures are slightly loosened, but all are present (12 total). Marked (on the underside) "Shreve & Co. San Francisco Sterling". The glass bowl is form-fitting and likely original. Light abrasion ring where it fits into the stand, but no cracks or chips noted.
