Description
Paul Storr (1771-1844) Sterling Silver Entree Dish, hallmarked London, 1797, of rectangular form with pinched corners and slightly concave sides, with gadrooned rim, the conforming fitted, domed lid with foliate-mounted reeded ring handle, engraved with the arms of Clarke of London, overall h. 6-1/4", l. 11", w. 9-1/4", 58.38 t. oz.
Condition
In generally very good condition, with no issues noted beyond the expected surface scuffs, dings and small bumps consistent with age and use. Well-engraved and crisp armorial; the crest of Clarke (a lark with wings expanded, holding in the beak an ear of wheat, proper) is engraved in the inner wall of the dish. Hallmarked (on the underside) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the London crowned leopard's head; 3) the date letter "B" for 1797-1798; 4) the George III bust duty mark in use 1797; and 5) the "P.S" maker's mark of Paul Storr. Marks very good, with the left edge of the maker's mark slightly worn but completely legible. The underside edge of the lid part-marked. A very nice piece.
