A GROUP OF 25 LEATHER BOUND BOOKS, LATE 19TH TO EARLY 20TH C.:A group of twenty-five leather bound books, including:
Plutarch's Lives: The Translation Called Dryden's, Corrected and Revised by Arthur Hugh Clough. The Philobiblion Edition. New York, Philadelphia, and Chicago: John D. Morris & Co., n.d. Complete in three volumes. One quarter binding in red morocco with cloth sides.
The Works of William Shakespeare. New York: The Mershon Co., 1885. Including 4 out of 12 volumes, comprising: Vol IV, Vol VII, Vol IX, and Vol XII. Each with cloth binding and gilt spines.
The Works of James Fenimore Cooper. Chicago, New York, and San Francisco: Belford, Clarke & Co., n.d. Includes 4 volumes, titled: "The Deerslayer", "The Last of the Mohicans", "The Pathfinder", and "The Prarie". Each half-bound in brown morocco with marbled paper sides, and marbled foredges.
The Oxford Thackeray With Illustrations. London, New York, and Toronto: Henry Frowde - Oxford University Press, n.d. Having 8 volumes, multiple titles. Bound in full red leather.
The Writings of George Eliot. Boston and New York: Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1908. Numbered 117 of 750 copies printed. Frontispieces in two states, frontispiece for Middlemarch Vol I signed in pencil by artist, and illustrated throughout with full page plates. Incomplete, having 6 of 25 volumes total, including: Vol IV "Adam Bede Vol II", Vol VII "Silas Marner and Brother Jacob", Vol IX "Romola Vol II", Vol X "Felix Holt, The Radical Vol I", Vol XII "Middlemarch Vol I", and Vol XV "Daniel Deronda Vol I". Each volume in contemporary three-quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, spines tooled and with raised bands, ruled and lettered in compartments, top edge gilt.
Condition
Plutarch's Lives: With some rubbing to spines and chipping to boards, especially at corners. The leather is in need of a good conditioning. With tanning to text. Binding appears tight, and the text is clean.
The Works of William Shakespeare: With some rubbing to spines and bumped corners. Some minor toning to pages. Binding is tight, text appears to be clean.
The Works of James Fennimore Cooper: With rubbing to spine and bumped corners. All of the edges are worn to some degree. With loss to leather on spine, especially to the "Pathfinder" volume. Tanning to paper, but binding remains tight and text appears clean.
The Oxford Thackeray: With rubbing to spines, some chipping, and minor open tears to top and bottom of spines. Ribbon bookmarks are still intact. Some very minor tanning, but otherwise text is in very good condition.
The Writings of George Eliot: The spines are lightly and uniformly sunned. With some minor bumping to corners. The leather covering the hinges is starting to crack slightly, but hinges are intact and binding is tight. With light tanning. Ribbon bookmarks are intact, but show damage in the form of fraying. Text appears clean, in good used condition (MK).
