Description
Attributed to Frank Henry. Mason (1876-1965) Marine School, Watercolour and gouache, King George V's Cutter yacht 'HMY Brittania ' probably with the king at the helm, racing at Cowes, Isle of Wight with the Royal yacht 'Victoria and Albert ' in the distance, 17 1/2 x 12 1/2''. An extremely successful ' Big Yacht ' winning 231 races and taking another 129 Flags. It was King George V's dying wish that his beloved yacht follow him to the grave and in on the 10th July 1936 she was sunk by HMS Winchester in Catherines Deep near the Isle of Wight. This marked the end of Big Yacht racing in Europe.
