Description
Europe, probably Italy or Spain, ca. 19th century CE. A large Majolica pottery drinking vessel handpainted with a crucified Christ, the crucifix inscribed with INRI stemming from the Latin phrase "Iesus Nazarenus Rex ludaeorum" meaning "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" - the notice Pontius Pilate nailed over Jesus as he died on the cross. The scene is set amid a landscape of flowering vines and isolated blooms - all in shaded of wine red, brown, blue, green, and yellow on a white ground. Size: 5.875" W to handle x 6.25" H (14.9 cm x 15.9 cm)
