Nigeria, Ogoni, ca. early 20th century CE. This is a handcarved wooden mask with a bird perched atop its head, leaning over the face. The features are exaggerated, with a large mouth, long nose, and thin slits for eyes; the bird sits in thick hair. The Ogoni people, living in the fertile land east of the Niger River Delta, have a long history of masquerading, despite the efforts of Christian missionaries to stop this activity. Masks are used in a wide variety of situations -- entertainment, participation in rituals, and attending social events like funerals. Stand pictured not included. Bird is attached (not a single carved piece), but attachment is still in place. There is a nice patina over the surface and most patina remains. One ear is broken off.
