Description
Africa, Nigeria, Igbo, Izzi or Ezza area, ca. early 20th century CE. A finely carved wood mask depicting an abstract human face for the Okperegede masquerade held at a festival that commemorates the reunion of a living communitiy with its ancestors. The visage was expertly carved showing wonderful detailing in the elaborate coiffure, subtly modeled face that is painted a contrasting white with closed pink lips. Size: 4.5" W x 9.5" H (11.4 cm x 24.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970
