Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Benin Kingdom, 19th century CE. A round bronze medallion made of spiraled bronze wiring and with applied bronze wire in smaller spirals and coils creating a concentric design on the face; bronze "straps" ending in loops have a bronze chain through them to create a necklace form. Benin is one of the great kingdoms of West Africa, an empire created in a rain forest that spanned over a millennium, famous for their bronze artwork, which was made for and worn by elites in the society. Size: 14.8" L x 3.3" W (37.6 cm x 8.4 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
