Description
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean/Florida, Taino people, ca. 15th century CE. A low-slung pottery bowl, with remains of reddish orange pigment and firing marks on the flat base; the handles are abstract designs that project symmetrically from each long end of the bowl. The Taino were an Arawak people who lived in the Caribbean and Florida around the time of contact with Europeans; they were the first people whom Columbus encountered. Many of their surviving items relate to ritual activities; this bowl may have been used for religious/magical offerings. Size: 10.8" L x 6.7" W x 2.3" H (27.4 cm x 17 cm x 5.8 cm)
