Description
Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A jaguar metate carved from volcanic stone with refined dimensions and intricate incised details. Note the beautiful interlocking motif around the platform and faintly still visible on the legs. Would have been used to grind hallucinogenic substances, medicines, etc. likely for ceremonial rituals. Size: 17" L x 6" H (43.2 cm x 15.2 cm)
