Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, Pihuamo style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A standing female figure with an expressive face, presenting a complicated pose - holding a jar on her large hunchback, with one hand leaning on her knee in a manner that suggests her load is heavy. White pigment details on the glossy red surface emphasize her eyes, earrings, bracelets, and skirt. Size: 5.1" W x 7.4" H (13 cm x 18.8 cm)

Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico. According to scholars, they were regarded as powerful, shamanic figures, their physical deformities signs that they had been touched by the deities.
