Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 100 CE. An enormous pottery tripod vessel, with a deep bowl and long, spider-like legs. The legs are hollow, suggesting they may have once held rattles, although these are now gone. Bands of cream/buff and dark, earthy red decorate the legs; the body of the bowl is entirely red, with two incised grooves around its exterior rim. The slip is smooth and glossy. Chupicuaro vessels like this one are boldly patterned and probably used for holding funerary offerings. Size: 13" W x 11.1" H (33 cm x 28.2 cm)
