Southeast Asia, Burma, Ava Period, ca. 18th to 19th centuries CE. This is an interesting small bronze object that looks like it was cast to sit atop an altar or be a part of a larger religious item, perhaps one made of wood or some other perishable material. It features the Buddha seated kneeling atop a long thin pole, attending by a small, bodhisattva-style attendant. This object was cast during the Ava period, a time of transition and upheaval in Burmese history, when ties with India - previously very strong - began to fall away because of the ongoing warfare and lack of centralized power. As a result, Buddha images changed from being influenced by the subcontinent to having their own Burmese style. This included depicting the Buddha in the round, as he is here, instead of with the lotus backing common to other times and places. Size: 3.25" W x 6.45" H (8.3 cm x 16.4 cm)
