Item Details
Description
India, Shunga Period, ca. 2nd to 1st century BCE. This is a mold-made terracotta plaque showing the goddess Yakshi (also known as Yakshini) in relief. The figure has the voluptuous form, especially in the hips and stance, of all depictions of the goddess. The Shunga period is notable for a flowering of artistic creation, especially of small terracotta images like this one. One of the most famous works of art from this period is the Great Stupa at Sanchi, in Madhya Pradesh, central India, whose four thirty-five foot high gateways are decorated with images of fertility spirits exactly like this yakshi. Size: 3.6" W x 6" H (9.1 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-New York collection.
