Description
Medieval Middle East, Turkey / Persia, Seljuk Empire (sometimes Seljuq), ca. 10th to 12th centuries CE. A fantastic small iron lock in the form of a striding horse, with clear keyhole above the lower front right leg (facing). The shape of the horse is naturalistic, with head raised, ears perked, and clearly carved hooves. A flat tail and curved hook rise from the back; the hook touches, but is not attached to, the head, presumably for attaching the lock; there is an indentation in the back of the horse's neck that was probably for inserting this iron part when the metal was still supple and newly cast. The Seljuks were at constant war throughout their reign, fighting internal factions, nomads from the east, and the Crusaders from Europe. They were famous for their fast, fierce horseback archers; these vital animals would have inspired the creation of this lock. The Seljuks had impressive locking technology, including combination lock boxes capable of over four million combinations; imagine what kinds of things they intended to lock away with a key lock such as this one! Size: 2.9" L x 0.7" W x 2.4" H (7.4 cm x 1.8 cm x 6.1 cm)
