Description
Holyland, Iron Age, ca. 8th to 5th century BCE. This is a pair of complementary small red buffware pottery vessels from the Holy Land, commonly called "juglets". One has twin loop handles, set on one side (rather than exactly opposite each other). The other has no handles, but does have a short spout projecting out from its shoulder. Both have a bulbous body shape with a rolled out rim. Size: 3.85" W x 3" H (9.8 cm x 7.6 cm)
Historically, the Iron Age is the time when Israel was becoming a unified state under kings David and Solomon; meanwhile, influences from Cyrpus, other parts of the Levant, and the Phoenicians were all creating a cultural melting pot that greatly influenced pottery styles. Juglets like this would presumably have been used to hold perfumes or other precious liquids.
Provenance: Ex-Private NYC collection
