Description
Ancient Near East, Iron Age, ca. 1st millenium BCE. A tan steatite stone carved stone head of a lion animal, which probably served as the handle of a ritual libation cup. The animal has deeply drilled eye sockets that would have been inlaid and the head is decorated with a fine geometric pattern of incised lines. Size: 1.6" W x 2" H (4.1 cm x 5.1 cm).
Provenance: Ex-English Collection of Edward Seymour Thomas, acquired early 20th Century
