Item Details
Description
Ancient Near East, Anatolia, modern day Turkey, ca. 2000 BCE. This is an interesting artifact. It appears to have once been a three-sided blackstone bead, pierced for suspension; then at some point in antiquity, probably very soon after it was originally produced based on wear, one side was flattened and smoothed and incised with a low-relief serpent. Some people have interpreted the presence of serpents on seals from the ancient Near East as amulets against snake bites; however, serpents are also commonly associated with deities in this culture. Size: 1.4" L x 0.6" W (3.6 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private LA County collection formed between 1980 and 1990
