Description
Western Europe, Germany or France, ca. 1400 CE. Wonderful iron dagger of a type known as a "Roundel Dagger." Called such because of the circular roundel that forms the guard. Short blade with raised central ridge, handle with surviving rivet where a bone or wooden grip would have been attached. Rondel daggers were worn suspended on the right side of the belt or slung from the front of it. There is some evidence to suggest that rondel daggers were popular with the emerging middle class in the mid-15th century. Merchants and tradesmen can be seen wearing them in a painting by Girat de Roussillon circa 1448. Custom stand. Size: 12" L (30.5 cm)
