Magna Graecia, Italy, Apulia/Daunian, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful duck askos, a vessel with a flattened shape and spout at one end, and a handle in the center, so-called for its resemblance in form to a member of the family Anatidae. These vessels were produced specially for funerary purposes, and many have been found in the chambered tombs dug out of the bedrock in this region of Italy. Many of these vessels, like this one, were ornamented with bands of geometric decoration called listati. This particular example has squared-off, linear designs in black and red over a cream background.

Both handle have surface cracks in the paint. Very nice remaining pigment overall.
