Description
Four Gramophone vinyl 78 rpm records of Lord Mountbatten's speech "A Plan for India" delivered in Dehli on June 3rd, 1947; two Gramophone vinyl 78rpm records of the speech "....not farewell but only Au revoir" given by the Edwina Countess Mountbatten of Burma in Dehli on June 19th, 1948. (6) After the end of WW2, the British Government led by Clement Attlee chose Lord Louis Mountbatten to be Viceroy of India and supervise the delicate passage from the English rule to the independence. Mountbatten and his wife arrived in Dehli on March 22nd, 1947 and the swearing in ceremony took place two days later. On 3rd June 1947, Mountbatten held a press conference and suddenly announced his plan for a full transfer of powers on 15th August 1947. Although Mountbatten had always wanted to hand over a unified India, it became clear that the only acceptable solution was to create a separate independent Pakistan in addition to an independent India. In Edwina's farewell broadcast to India in June 1948, she delivered this emotional and personal speech - Although in a physical sense my husband, Pamela and I will be leaving India so soon, we shall always be with you in spirit, and I think you know you will have our affection, our gratitude and our prayers at all times. The close links of comradeship that have been forged between us are such that can never be broken, and I know that it is inevitable that I shall return. So this is not farewell, but only au revoir "
