Description
Autograph letter signed ('C.G. Gordon') to Sir Walter Besant, reading "I was talking with Mr Schick today, about the tombs near Skull Hill. He says in 1879 he found three tombs, those at B. in Shalala, and also that he has sent you plan of bouldery he found at X. It has not been opened out any more since he sent you the plan. I have a firm idea that we shall find that Constantine's Churches are near Skull Hill and that they eventually be found. The Jewish, I hear, have bought the land up to the Slaughter House, I do not know the price, they are not seeking there, but have a huge number of workmen at Latrun, where they found the Baptistery. Schick says the owner of the place X will like it be opened, if he is put to no expense. I dare say this may be the sepulchre itself where he has built his house at the part coloured red. Evidently from the ornamentation, it was a good building. 12 metres is what Schick thinks was radius of the circle. In tomb B. he found a sarcophagus, Schick says Conden saw those when here last year, and that they are of same year as the tomb Conden describes. I comply myself, I prefer that the sepulchre should be a single one, not a family one", with small pen and ink sketch by Gordon of the site of the sepulchre, four pages, folding marks, light creasing to corners, light foxing, a few pin holes to top left corner, 8vo , Jerusalem, 9 June 1883. Gordon made a pilgrimage to Palestine in 1883, during a break in military service. Once in Jerusalem, he decided to investigate the 'true' site of the Golgotha. During his visit he proposed a new site, now referred as the Garden Tomb. Sir Walter Besant was the secretary of the Society for the Systematic and Scientific Exploration of Palestine.
