Description
Kauer Ceremonial Jacket, Sumatra, Indonesia. Embroidered cowry (nassa) shells, metallic threads and sequins on handwoven cotton. Natural and synthetic dyes; very good condition; circa early 20th c. These jackets were made entirely from one woven fabric; the finely woven pattern on small panel on rear of jacket is created by supplementary weft technique; these highly valued jackets are no longer made and were originally made and worn by young, unmarried Kauer women in the western mountainous region of southern Sumatra. Size: 12'' x 56.5'' (30 x 144 cm). Provenance: Collection of Monroe and Carol Whitaker.
