Description
This is an exceptional Crow Native American Indian Spontoon War Club Tomahawk from circa 1850. The rare and important mid-19th century example shows a hand forged spontoon head with a median ridge running along the center of the blade and two bleeder holes with upward curled basal processes. The wood haft is adorned with a long wrap of early tarnished copper wire, brass trade tack accents at the top, and an Indian tanned hide wrist thong. The piece is attributed to the Crow Indians in Wyoming and was reportedly used in a battle between the Crow and Sioux tribes on a butte in Northern Nebraska. Provenance: From the personal collection of renowned collector and foremost expert on war clubs and tomahawks, Mark Francis. The Francis collection piece has been authenticated and is truly a museum quality important artifact. 21 1/8"L x 7.5"W with the blade being 2.75"W at the curls.
