110 wood engraved proof vignettes (or tail-pieces) from Bewick's British Birds, lightly foxed, 37 x 59mm to 83 x 110mm., [c.1825] Research made by the previous owner suggests that these "were done prior to 1828, the year of Bewick's death, because they contain the impression of the occupid privy (the later boarded-up version) of which one of the daughters (?Jane) so harshly disapproved. This vignette was included in the 1822 edition, but is missing from the posthumous 1832 and 1847 editions. The latter carries an advertisement on the last page for "A few sets of [unspecified] VIGNETTES, on India paper, £2 2 0".
