Item Details
Description
Watercolour, pen and ink and gouache on paper Signed and dated 2000 lower right 46 x 63cm. (18 1/8 x 24 3/4in.) Provenance: Galerie François Ditesheim, Neuchâtel Acquired from the above by the present owner in 2000 Exhibited: Musée Jenisch, Cabinet Cantonal des Estampes, Les Lieux Imaginaires d'Erik Desmazi ères, June-September 2007, no. 103, illustrated in the exhibition catalogue p. 108 A Moroccan artist born in 1948, Desmazieres moved to France in 1967, where he spent the following four years studying at the Institut d Etudes Politiques de Paris. After a brief spell at the Ecole speciale d architecture, Desmazieres left the school to pursue engraving under the tuition of Jean Delpech. Desmazieres is perhaps best known for his fantastical depictions of architectural landscapes, most notably the etchings used to illustrate Georg Luis Borges The Library of Babel (1941). Libraries and places of learning are a recurring subject of Desmazieres work, with a central globe motif, similar to the one depicted in La salle de lecture , often featuring. Similarly, despite depicting a real street, the same stylistic approach employed by Desmazieres in his imaginary landscapes can be seen in Vue sur la rue Livingstone, nocturne , where the combined effect of Desmazieres trademark stylised-linear buildings and atmospheric light produce an ethereal, otherworldly quality.
