A steatite Pipe in the shape of a killer whale USA, South California Length: 22cm. (8 5/8in.) Circa 1000 B.C. Provenance: Collection Paul Stover Wingert (1900-1974) Sale: Christie's, Paris, 11th November 2007, lot 127 Literature: Miles, Charles, Indian and Eskimo Artifacts of North America, Chicago , 1963, p. 158, fig; 6.70 The killer whale is represented with stylised features, eyes inset with shell, the bone pipe issued from the tail. Old label on the body of the whale. According to Miles (op..cit..) it is likely these type of objects were fetishes used before or during a whale hunt. All lots in this sale have been imported from outside the EU and are under Temporary Admission, therefore the buyer must pay the import VAT at the rate of 5% on the Hammer Price.
